A Prediction Market Trader Made $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.
One account, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Market statistics shows that users put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However the odds had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in positions right before the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Legal Questions Emerges
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
